Biodata of
Bernhoff A. Dahl, M.D.

Dr. Bernie Dahl is a Board-certified physician, author, lecturer, consultant, world traveler, mountaineer, and above all, a gourmand.  He has spent a lifetime enjoying fine dining, and lots of it... hors d'oeuvres, salads, pastas, entrées of all types, and desserts, as well as Russian vodka and American wine.  He is a world expert on roast lamb, blueberry pie and butter pecan ice cream. Simply stated, Dr. Dahl loves life fully... including food and drink.

Dr. Dahl has spent over five decades personally wrestling with weight control... and has won... most of the time.  At six feet in height, his broad-shouldered and muscular genetically-Norwegian frame has carried an adult weight averaging about 205 lbs., but has ranged from as little as 185 to as much as 250 pounds. Dr. Dahl’s philosophy re: his ideal weight is summed up in a simple phrase: whatever I weigh today.  Dr. Dahl is a classic example of a successful yo-yo dieter, for when the circumstances call for it, such as for a wedding, trek, or a major mountaineering adventure, he can readily lose weight.

Dr. Dahl was born in New Jersey, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Chemistry at Wheaton College (Illinois) and an M.D. from Cornell University. He completed an Internship and Residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Vermont Hospitals.  He served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta.  At the tender age of 33 he was named as Chief of Pathology at Eastern Maine Medical Center. During his 25 years as a pathologist he studied the effects of nutrition and obesity on an intimate level; that is, at the level of autopsies... over 3,000 of them.  He saw, first hand, the effects of obesity not only on one’s lifestyle but on its multi-system detrimental effects on the human body.

Trained at Cornell University Medical College, some eight years after fellow Cornellian Dr. Robert Atkins, Dr. Dahl has had a long interest in diets for weight control, including the low-carbohydrate diet popularized by Dr. Atkins.  The low carbohydrate diet had its beginning in England about 100 years ago and variations on the theme had been previously popularized by Dr. Stillman and later by Dr. Tarnower (The Scarsdale Diet).  Over the decades Dr. Dahl, both as a pathologist (a student of natural history of disease processes) and an epidemiologist (a student of the effects and treatments of diseases in large populations) has studied the widest range possible of diets, pharmaceuticals, and surgical procedures.  He also studied the effects of lifestyle changes, as well as behavioral and environmental modifications for successful weight control.  His interest is also based on his own personal needs for weight control.

Over the decades, Dr. Dahl has personally employed successfully the best of a range nutritional diets, as well as environmental and lifestyle modification.  He has avoided the use of any pharmaceuticals or any surgical procedures. The end results of his personal studies and commitment is Dr. Dahl's Victorious Yo-Yo Diet and Lifestyle!
